Brief: by Market Research: (excerpt) – BMI’s 2010 update of our Finland Telecommunications Report contains new forecasts updated to 2014, as well as the latest news on the mobile, fixed-line and broadband markets, up to the end of 2009. In 2009, the Finnish mobile market expanded by 12.9%. This is particularly impressive because it is barely less than the 13.1% growth observed for 2008. At the end of 2009, we find mobile penetration at 146.9%, which is pretty high for Western Europe. In fact, with penetration and growth still as high as they are, it suggests that Finland is following a different growth and maturity trajectory than some of the larger Western European markets such as Germany and the UK, and may well have growth momentum to reach a 200% penetration rate. BMI is forecasting the penetration rate to reach 197.1% by the end of 2014. Part of the fuel for this continuing growth is the prepaid growth drive that the operators have remained focused on from 2008 into 2009. For example, during 2008, Finland’s mobile market leader,
TeliaSonera, saw its prepaid customer base grow by over 39%, while the operator’s postpaid customers grew by just 6.7%. It is thought that much of the strong prepaid growth experienced by TeliaSonera relates to the mobile customers of MVNOs such as Tele Finland and Armas, which use TeliaSonera’s network. Finland’s other two mobile network operators, Elisa and DNA, also reported strong prepaid customer growth in 2008. DNA in particular reported strong growth in the number of MVNO customers on its network. Elisa in particular has been the strongest at continuing this into 2009. Elisa does not actually report postpaid versus prepaid additions, but BMI believes that prepaid is still featuring heavily in its new subscribers.
3G data subscribers are also helping to maintain these growth levels, since data-only subscriptions push for more multiple SIM ownership. Finland has a very high appetite for broadband and data services, with the government having actually declared broadband access to be a universal right. With Finland’s landscape and areas of extremely sparse population, wireless technologies have considerable potential, and, among these 3G services, have been playing a significant part. According to BMI’s data, 3G connections made up 29% of the total mobile market at the end of 2009.
Finland’s fixed-line market is declining, but not terribly fast. Again, appetite for broadband is helping to maintain connections. Operators are preparing to deal with more losses in fixed-line subscriptions by investing in alternative technologies such as wireless technologies and fibre. These may be seen as safer investments in a market like Finland with such a well-demonstrated broadband appetite than in other parts of Western Europe.
