QXL Poland
The owner of the Polish auction portal Allegro.pl signed a contract with Polkomtel, a mobile telephony operator to launch an MVNO. In March 2008, Naspers acquired Tradus (formerly QXL and listed on the London Stock Exchange), which provides an online auction platform and internet portals in Eastern Europe. The company owns Allegro.pl, which is the leading online auction site in Poland. At £946 million, this acquisition represents Naspers’ largest acquisition to date.

ASTER Sp. z o.o
Aster, one of the major CaTV operators in Poland, is planning to enter the mobile market on the basis of an MVNO agreement with one of the existing operators.

Carrefour (MoVa)
French hypermarkets group Carrefour has launched its MVNO service, Carrefour Mova. Mova means ‘speak’, ‘speech’ or ‘talk’ in Polish. Choosing it as a lock-up with the word Carrefour made the product’s function very clear while giving the brand an attractive, fresh, contemporary feel. Massive in-store presence, exceptional product placement, a clear pricing proposition and deep integration with the retail experience made for a very strong market entry. As in Italy, all shoppers in Carrefour stores in Poland are rewarded with free minutes – every 10 złotys spent earns one free minute of Mova airtime. The reload code for free minutes is printed on each cash slip, with the number of free minutes automatically calculated from the total receipt. Moreover, Polish shoppers can exchange loyalty points for Carrefour Mova minutes. Carrefour Visa clients are also eligible for special offers and promotions. Carrefour Mova runs on Effortel’s technology platform connected to the Polkomtel network which boasts the best coverage and network quality in Poland.

Crowley is introducing four tariff plans: TeleMobile Zero, without subscription, and TeleMobile 35, 70 and 120 with monthly subscriptions costing PLN 35, PLN 70 and PLN 120 respectively. Crowley operates on the telecom market as a service provider for companies and institutions including NIK (the National Audit Chamber), NFZ (the National Health Fund), TVP (Polish state television), and IPN (the Institute of National Remembrance). The company plans to defend its leading position on the market of tailor-made offers for corporate clients.

Cyfrowy Polsat
Cyfrowy Polsat, a digital satellite TV provider, has its own MVNO solution which it launched at the beginning of July 2008. In the middle of June Cyfrowy Polsat managed to connect its network to PTK Centertel and Polkomtel’s networks. The new virtual network will be based on the infrastructure made available by PTC (the Era network operator). Cyfrowy Polsat mobile has its own access code, ‘PL12’, network meeting points, interconnect agreements, a billing system, and CRM. As a TV operator, Cyfrowy Polsat reaches 2.2m households and 7.5m Poles.

Heyah
Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa Sp. z o.o. is the operator of the Era and Heyah mobile telephony networks. Since it started its commercial activity in 1996 under the Era GSM brand (currently Era), the firm has rapidly gained the position of one of the largest Polish companies. Heya is Pre-paid “quasi” SP launched in March 2004 targeting the youth segments. PTC offers three categories of services: the Era brand dedicated to individual customers, Era Biznes to institutional clients, and Tak Tak and Heyah as pre-paid offers.

Integer.pl Group
The companies forming Integer.pl Corporate Group carry out business activities in three main areas: (1) Distribution of promotional materials organised by the dominant subject in the Group, Interger.pl SA. (2) Postal services for parcels heavier than 50g provided by InPost, the largest private-run postal firm in Poland. (3) Finance and insurance services offered by InPost Finanse, an independent financial company. In June 2010, A4, a telecom operator owned by Integer.pl Group, took over 100% shares of CP Telecom Sp. z o.o. worth 5.4 million PLN from Carrefour Polska Sp. z o.o. The investment is another stage of the project of implementing innovative services in direct marketing with the use of a virtual GSM operator. The newly incorporated entity is going to introduce the first solutions in direct marketing to the market at the turn of the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2010.

Inteligo Bank
Inteligo Financial Services S.A. offers online banking. The company was incorporated in 2000 and is based in Warszawa, Poland. Inteligo Financial Services S.A. operates as a subsidiary of Powszechna Kasa Oszczednosci Bank Polski SA. Inteligo Bank has created an MVNO Subsidiary in co-operation with PTC. Inteligo Financial Services (IFS), technological arm of the PKO BP Group, intends to win 200,000 users. The offer will be directed at the 2.5m electronic banking customer group. IFS assumes it will be able to convince 10% of existing customers to join its new mobile brand. The IFS president believes such a number of users to be profitable and denies that this project is merely an Inteligo Bank loyalty scheme, and states it is meant to yield profit. PTC will gain 1,000 Inteligo points of sale and hopes to refocus on the existing Inteligo customers.

Liberty
Liberty Poland S.A. is an authorized partner of Polkomtel – an operator of the GSM Plus cellular telephony network. At present Liberty has more than 150 shops in a few dozen cities and one of the biggest sales networks of cellular telephones in Poland, which serves millions of customers every year. Liberty Poland S.A. holds an MVNO license however it has not completed its access, or holds an agreement with an MNO.

On the 12th of November 2009, Multimedia Polska introduces mobile broadband under the brand name MobilNET and in In December 2009, they rolled out a mobile voice service called mobilFON. MobilFON offers users a converged VoIP and GSM service which supports seamless roaming between Wi-Fi and cellular networks without any disruption to calls. In addition, Multimedia also offers Chat/Instant Messaging services to users on both Wi-Fi and 3G networks using Cicero Networks‘ IP messaging client software on their phones. Multimedia Polska SA is a Poland-based company. The principal activities of the Company are telecommunication services, especially radio, television (TV), telephone and Internet on cable television system. The Company is also a cable operator, provider of digital television with video on demand, broadband and mobile data, and fixed-line and mobile voice (mobilFON). However for cheap calls customers must dial an access number which is restricted to landlines (and of course mobile phones in RPP countries) only. The “direct-dial” international rates are not very competitive. Recently, mobile operator Centernet , which is owned by the NFI Midas investment fund, has signed a conditional agreement to purchase selected components of Elterix, a subsidiary of Mediatel. The contract concerns the rights to the Telepin brand. The total value of the agreement is PLN 3m (€719,100). The deal will enable Centernet to strengthen its position as a mobile service provider on the Polish market.

tuBiedronka
Biedronka, a discount retailer, rolled out sales of start-up packages for its own mobile virtual network under the tuBiedronka brand name. The chain is moving into the MVNO market in cooperation with Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa. Its number prefix is 727. The tuBiedronka offer includes three packages with mobile phones and a start-up SIM card with credits allowing clients to make a two-minute phone call or send seven text messages. Recently tuBiedronka announced that they had acquired 70,000 subscribers to their service.

wRodzinie is a Seniors based MVNO service for the elderly, using simple handsets designed for the segment. wRodzinie telephony consistent of a consortium of company; Bonum Sp. z oo in Warsaw, Multi-Channel Marketing Group Sp. z oo in Gdańsk and the Lux Veritatis Foundation in Warsaw and CenterNet. In late 2010, the Lux Veritatis Foundation withdrew its support for the service, and Centernet has taken over the responsibilities of Lux.

GG Network operates under the brand name GaduAIR. The new offer is integrated with other services, including the popular gadu-gadu. In March 2008, Naspers acquired Tradus (formerly QXL and listed on the London Stock Exchange), which provides an online auction platform and internet portals in Eastern Europe. The company owns Allegro.pl, which is the leading online auction site in Poland. At £946 million, this acquisition represents Naspers’ largest acquisition to date.

In Brief: Poland Telecommunications Market 2010 (published 2011-01-12)

Conclusions on individual clients


Survey results indicate a high degree of telecommunications services saturation. A decisive majority of respondents possess a telephone (94,4%), regardless of technology used for this purpose. 32,6% of respondents posses both a fixed and mobile telephone. Slightly over half of those interviewed use only a mobile phone. Every tenth person possesses only a fixed phone. Only 5,6% of survey participants do not possess any phone.

FIXED TELEPHONY MARKET:

• In 2010 43,1% of Poles declared owning a fixed phone in their own household.
• Telekomunikacja Polska recorded the highest rate of spontaneous awareness (94,2%) out of all fixed telephony operators. The second well known operator is Netia, mentioned by over half of interviewees (53,1%). Telefonia Dialog is the next recognizable provider, indicated by a quarter of respondents (24,2%).
• Telekomunikacja Polska tops the ranking as far as the number of subscribers is concerned. It is the primary operator for 67,9% of respondents who possess a fixed phone. None of the other operators exceeds the 13% threshold.
• Survey results show considerably high client satisfaction as far as services of fixed operators are concerned. Average ratings are: TP – 3,9 while Dialog and Netia – 4,0 each (on a 5 point satisfaction scale).
• The main reason for not possessing a fixed phone, according to the respondents, was the fact that they used a mobile phone (70%). There was also a price factor mentioned: 28,3% of those not having a fixed phone declare it is too expensive.
• The average monthly payment for a fixed phone in a household is around 65,7 PLN. The largest group of fixed telephone owners are those whose monthly bills range from 51 to 100 PLN (45,4%).

MOBILE TELEPHONY MARKET:

• 84,0% of Poles declare owning a mobile phone. Thus, the saturation of individual market by a mobile telephony service exceeds the saturation by a fixed telephony service by 43 percentage points.
• Spontaneous awareness of the three largest mobile telephony brands is similar: Era (82,8%), Orange (81,1%) and Plus (77,7%). Over half of respondents know the mobile operator Play (61,2%).
• Interviewees most often use the services of the Orange network operator – 37,5%. A large proportion of those surveyed possess a mobile phone in Era (33,1%) and Plus (24,6%) networks.
• Voice calls are the most frequently used form of communication in mobile telephony. 85,2% of respondents rank them first. SMS is also a popular form of communication, used by mobile phone owners. 16,3% rank them first. MMS and data transmission is still hardly popular. It is used by 0,8% of respondents.
• The total average monthly payment for using a mobile phone is significantly higher for users paying for a subscription (75 PLN) than pre-paid card holders (41 PLN) or mix users (45 PLN).

INTERNET MARKET:

• A majority of households (61,5%) declare owning a computer. 86,1% of those households which possess a computer have access to Internet.
• A majority of Poles accessed Internet last month (56,3%), out of which the majority accessed the network at their own home (87%) or at work (39,5%).
• Polish Internet users, who used it last month, declare a high frequency of accessing the medium – 71,4% use Internet daily.
• A decisive majority of respondents, using Internet at home, have a fixed line, primarily broadband access. ¼ of respondents (25,4%) access Internet through a line of 1 Mb/s to 1,99 Mb/s speed while 27% of those surveyed use a line of 2 to 5,99 Mb/s speed.
• Gadu-Gadu is the most frequently used means of communication in the market of internet communicators (86,7%) while Skype ranks first (71,8%) as far as voice communicators are concerned.

Conclusions on institutional clients
Survey results indicate that a majority of businesses interviewed (60,3%) use both fixed and mobile phones. A significantly lower percentage of companies use only a fixed phone (8,3%) or only a mobile phone (31,5%).

FIXED TELEPHONY MARKET:

• TP is a fixed telephony operator whose services are used most frequently by businesses, almost four fifths (79,6%). Netia notes a considerable market share out of alternative operators. 10,9% of surveyed businesses use its services. Dialog Telephony recorded an insignificant share – 2,9%.
• An average monthly bill for using a telephone, considering all surveyed operators, is 181 PLN. The average monthly bill for using a TP’s phone service is almost identical (180 PLN).
• A satisfaction level for the two operators (TP and Netia), which was assessed by the respondents, is high. 88,5% of those interviewed rate TP’s services as “good” and “very good”. 86,7% of respondents rate Netia’a services in this way.

MOBILE TELEPHONY MARKET:

• Most businesses use the services of the following mobile telephony operators: Orange (44,1%) and Era (30,8%). Services of Plus are used by 22,3% of firms. The figure for Play is 10,1%.
• One or two mobile phones are most frequently used in surveyed companies. One phone is used by 40 – 49% of businesses while two phones by 28 – 33% of business (depending on the operators whose services are used by a given firm). Three phones are used by 11 – 15% of companies. Using a high number of mobile phones (4 and more) was most often declared by the Era’s (11,5%) and Orange’s (9,3%) clients. The highest average number of phones (2,26) is declared by Era’s clients.
• The average monthly bill for the services of mobile operators is quite diversified: Orange’s business clients pay an average monthly bill of 264,5 PLN, 215,1 PLN – Plus, 199,6 PLN – Era, 179 PLN – Play.
• The level of satisfaction for services provided to businesses by mobile operators is high – in all measured areas operators are rated above the average of 4,0 in a 5 point scale.

INTERNET MARKET

• In over half of interviewed firms (59%) employees use desktop computers. In 42% of businesses employees use portable computers (laptops).
• 91,1% of firms possessing computers also have Internet access. In 80,1% of cases access is fixed. 15% of businesses use mobile Internet access. Companies primarily use two kinds of speed: from 1 to 1,99 Mb/s (34,3%) and from 2 to 5,99 Mb/s (35,3%).
• Average monthly expenses on Internet are 97 PLN.
• A decisive majority of clients (88,8%) described their satisfaction with their internet provider as good or very good.
