PC manufacturer Dell is to launch its own-branded mobile broadband service on a range of connected devices in the UK, in partnership with cloud service provider Macheen and mobile operator Three.
The deal for the service, known as Dell NetReady, comes just weeks after Three forged a partnership with Macheen to target the connected devices market, opening up a new revenue stream for the operator.
Under the terms of the deal, Macheen will act as an MVNE (Mobile Virtual Network Enabler) for Dell, providing it with access to Three’s network and to cloud-based white label billing and support system.
The service allows Dell, which has an estimated 10% of the global PC market, to bundle its own-branded mobile broadband services with its products. The service will be pre-installed on selected Dell devices. Users register on the Dell NetReady control panel to gain access and can then choose from a number of pay-as-you-go plans. The revenue generated will be split between Dell, Macheen and Three.
The NetReady service is part of Dell’s strategy to establish service relationships with its customers by offering mobile broadband connectivity ‘hot out of the box’. It also allows Dell to set its own pay-as-you-go tariffs for its customers and means the end user is not required to engage directly with an operator in order to get online.
This is the third MVNO deal Macheen has struck with Dell, having already launched Dell NetReady in Germany in February last year and in the US in May. However, a UK launch date for the service has yet to be confirmed. Dell, Macheen and Three declined to comment.
At the launch of Dell NetReady in Germany last year, Macheen said in a statement: ‘Dell is indeed one of the first device makers in the world to power its own service for its connected devices.
‘From a Macheen perspective, we believe that together with device manufacturers and retailers we can change the rules and move toward every device being an ‘Internet Included’ device.
‘After all, connected devices make connected customers. Consumers would rather focus on what they can do when they are connected, rather than how to get connected in the first place.
‘An always-connected device powered by the Macheen cloud service platform creates all kinds of new opportunities for ongoing revenue streams and tailored service offerings.’
