The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) has signed a second contract with a consortium of companies for the implementation of a virtual mobile operator in Costa Rica. The local newspaper Nacion.com has quoted from Carlos Federico Monge, president of Virtualis, that the firm will have its own service platform, code numbers and mobile operator will be recognized as a Full MVNO.
Virtualis consortium (involves retailers Grupo Monge and Casa Blanca) and as indicated above will operate there own platform of services, numbers and operator codes and will be released in the coming months for the prepaid segment. In November, the state operator signed the first contract with the TV station,”Televisora de Costa Rica“/ Channel 7 in Costa Rica, although the TV channel has not yet announced the date of release.
Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad [Costa Rican Institute of Electricity] is the Costa Rican government-run electricity and telecommunications services provider.
Grupo Monge (the Group, or the company) is a leading, family-owned retailer of consumer electronics, household appliances and furniture in Central America, serving mainly low and middle-low income consumers. The company began its retail operations in Costa Rica in 1970 and has since expanded its retail operations to 325 stores in five Regional countries including Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. The company’s activities also include a wholesaling operation in Costa Rica and a consumer finance arm that complements the retailing business by providing customers with financing for in-store purchases. The company is undertaking an investment program estimated to cost about $425 million to support the expansion of the company’s existing operations and for debt refinancing.
