Vodafone Group Plc (VOD) has renewed its 5 year agreement with BT Group Plc (BT/A) to continue running its BT Mobile product which is an MVNO on the operator’s network which according to a recent publication by the Times (15 March 2011) has roughly 100,000 subscribers.
The move indicates that BT is taken the mobile phone market seriously, as the telecom giant sold off its O2 mobile unit 10 years ago.
BT returned to the mobile market in 2004 when it signed an MVNO deal with Vodafone.
A Vodafone spokesperson said: ‘Vodafone can confirm that it has renewed its deal with BT, building on our quality long-term partnership. It means BT will be able to continue to enjoy the UK’s best mobile network and will continue to use Vodafone mobile phone masts and network to provide mobile services to business customer and staff. This is just the latest success for Vodafone UK’s rapidly expanding wholesale business, which also provides network support to Amazon’s Kindle ebook and MVNO services to companies including Asda and Lebara.
BT Mobile
BT Mobile originally was a full Mobile network, which was sold off, and rebranded as O2, however BT kept some aspects of the network up, and it is using the infrastructure for Business Voice Solutions and Data through USB Modems (Dongle’s) for Mobile Broadband.
