Acotel SpA, (ACO:IM)from which the Group takes its name, was the first company in the world to develop an SMS information service. This service, launched in 1997 in collaboration with Telecom Italia Mobile and known as ScripTIM by Acotel, brought mobile telecommunications and media together, offering cell phone access to real-time news coverage from the ANSA press agency.

We have moved on since the launch of ScripTIM by Acotel, in 2009 becoming once again the first to offer mobile banking services, thanks to an industrial agreement with the Intesa Sanpaolo banking group, which has given rise to the joint venture, Nòverca Italia.

Since our stock market listing in August 2000, we have continued to achieve earnings growth and expand geographically: today we generate 80% of our revenue of approximately 140 million euros overseas (FY 2009), where 75% of our 465-strong staff operate.

Mobile Solutions (MVNO)
The Group began operating as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator in March 2009, which saw the commercial launch of Nòverca Italia Srl, a company set up under the joint venture agreement with the Intesa Sanpaolo banking group, which owns 34% of the new company using Telecom Italy as the underlying MNO.

The fact that Intesa Sanpaolo is a shareholder in Nòverca Italia is of great importance for the company, which has been set up by the two partners not only with a view to providing mobile financial services, but also with the aim of creating new uses for cell phones and, above all, new ways of accessing the services they provide.

Nòverca Italia’s proprietary technology platform represents a potent competitive advantage, enabling the company to have full control over the development of new services, to benefit from significant operational flexibility and to be able to reduce and control its costs.

The new services brought to market by the company are based on “Novità and Ricerca” (Innovation and Research), a feature that was also behind the name of Nòverca itself. The SIM Card distributed by Nòverca Italia has been called Extended SIM, reflecting the fact that it marks an important new departure for mobile telecommunications: to supply users with a growing range of services via an easy-to-use and intuitively designed menu.

Value added services
In this area of business the Group operates through the subsidiaries, Acotel SpA (Rome), Flycell Inc. (New York), Info2Cell.com FZ-LLC (Dubai) and Acotel do Brasil SA (Rio del Janeiro).

This business is divided into four segments:

B2C (or Business to Consumer): in this segment the Group sells its services – primarily content, ringtones, images, games and information – directly to the final customer, carrying out all the related activitiesfrom communications to customer care;
Network Operator: in this segment the Group provides services on behalf of telephone companies (mainly mobile) in accordance with theApplication Service Provisioning (ASP) model;
Corporate: in this segment the Group supplies interactive mobile services to organisations that in the case of banks, for example, want to offer mobile information and services to their customers;
Media: this segment manages value added services on behalf of TV, radio or other media, offering, for example, viewers or listeners the chance to vote or buy content relating to a certain television or radio programme.

Mobile messaging & media solutions
In this area, the Group operates through its Dublin-based subsidiary, Jinny Software Ltd..

Jinny enables mobile network operators to drive revenue, manage costs, retain customers and shorten time-to-market through a range of messaging and media solutions and services and a fully managed mobile advertising service.

Jinny’s product suite includes highly efficient, future-proof core messaging platforms and ARPU-enhancing applications built on open and common architectures.

Security systems
The Group operates in this area of business through its subsidiary, AEM SpA (Rome), a company founded in 1980 that has built up a strong reputation at national level, serving customers such as the Bank of Italy, Acea and Telecom Italia.

AEM develops and produces security systems designed to meet the needs of large organisations and offering solutions that range from simple access controls to sophisticated video-surveillance systems.
