Colombia – Stability a pre-requisite for ICT growth
Colombia retains its position in the group of 25 resource and efficiency-driven economies on the Connectivity Scorecard 2010. It is a moderate performer hampered by a poor business infrastructure.
Colombia boasts an above-par consumer infrastructure, with respectable fixed-line and mobile penetration and relatively strong broadband penetration. Consumer usage and skills are equally moderate, with high literacy rates ratcheting up its scores. It also fares well on the government-related metrics. However, Colombian businesses are not strong investors in IT hardware, software and services, and the country’s weak performance on almost all business-related metrics raises concerns.
Most resource and efficiency-driven economies face myriad infrastructure challenges. In Colombia’s case, these are exacerbated by the ongoing social, political and economic instability and it severely hampers its progress in areas such as ICT.
